The PMT/UMT(275) Series and PMT(301) Series, known as Power Gaps due to their ability to handle high-speed, high-current transient surges, have peak current ratings in excess of 20kA. These gaps are small in size, with a body length of 0.75” and a diameter of 0.315”, and are internally stabilized for dark operation. To obtain fast response time, a high dielectric ceramic is inserted between the electrodes to concentrate the electric field at the cathode to enhance the release of electrons and accelerate the breakdown process. The PMT/UMT(275) Series is optimized for its fast breakdown characteristic whereas the PMT(301) Series is optimized for long life and low capacitance (maximum 2.0pF).

Life tests of select members of each series have been conducted to determine the resulting coulomb ratings. For the PMT/UMT(275) Series, tests were conducted at 1000A(8/20)µs with a resulting rating of 10 coulombs and for the PMT(301) Series, tests were conducted at 100A(8/20)µs with a resulting rating of 12 to 136 coulombs

The small size and rugged construction of these gaps make them suitable for protection applications in severe environments. The damage caused by unwanted transients extends to all types of components and equipment: meters and motors, relays and resistors, crowbars and communication equipment are all susceptible to the effects of transients.  When Power Gaps are used to protect components operating on 120VAC power lines, a one ohm three watt resistor is connected in series with the gap to insure turnoff of the current at the AC zero crossing.  These Power Gaps are used to protect signal and power lines from transients generated by lightning and other electro-magnetic impulses.

The UBD/UBT/UGT Series, known as Uni-Imps, provides the ultimate in surge protection from high energy, fast rising transients. These devices are constructed using a proprietary semiconductor junction process which results in ultra-fast response times combined with peak current ratings in the 5,000-10,000 ampere range. A unique benefit of this technology is that the breakdown voltage is virtually independent of the rise time with transients up to 200Kv/µs transients over the life time of the device. In addition, the low capacitance of these devices allows direct placement on high frequency lines and antenna feeds without excessive loading.

The Spark Igniter Gap (SIG) Series is a new high performance gas discharge switch that overcomes traditional spark gaps’ drawbacks of limited life, rapid electrode wear out and need for frequent replacement. Special materials have been used for enhanced electron emission to provide millions of discharges with dc breakdown remaining within tight rated limits. Spark gaps with dc breakdown voltage in the range of 2.0 - 4.0kV are standard. All devices are bipolar and mounting in either direction is optional.

High Energy Devices’ Uni-Imps high-speed transient surge protectors (0.55-20kV) provide the ultimate protection from high-energy, fast-rising transients such as Nuclear EMP.
